Toward an architecture of visioning: Insights from Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia

Vision is widely recognized as a central leadership mechanism for motivating followers and directing collective action. Yet, existing research has largely treated vision as a leader-articulated statement or communicative act, offering limited insight into how visions endure, evolve, and remain collectively enacted over extended periods of time. Drawing on Antoni Gaudı’s Sagrada Familia as a theoretical lens, I develop a theory of visioning as a generative organizing system of collective future-making. I conceptualize the architecture of visioning as comprising three interdependent processes: vision crafting, through which collective futures are imagined and articulated; vision structuring, through which they are anchored in temporal, symbolic and material arrangements; and vision resonating, through which they become collectively inhabited and carried forward by collaborators. Together, these processes operate recursively through the interplay of leadership and organizing, generating inviting and enabling effects that support the realization of collective futures. By shifting attention from vision statements to visioning systems, I reframe vision as an ongoing organizing accomplishment and offers a new perspective on how collective futures are created and sustained across generations.

Beyond Cultural Bias: Understanding the Intercultural Capability of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly deployed in culturally diverse environments, yet little is known about its intercultural capability or how this capability shapes human-AI collaboration. Using the Cultural Intelligence (CQ) framework as the theoretical lens, we investigate the intercultural capability of leading large language models across four studies. First, AI models exhibited distinct intercultural capability profiles, with cognitive CQ showing the greatest variation across models. However, AI models’ self-reports showed limited correspondence with independent evaluations by CQ experts, suggesting that self-described intercultural capability is a poor indicator of demonstrated competence. Second, both American and Chinese users consistently perceived AI models developed within their own cultural context as possessing greater intercultural capability. Comparisons with expert evaluations further showed limited correspondence between users’ perceptions and expert-evaluated intercultural capability. Third, perceived AI intercultural capability enhanced cross-cultural effectiveness only when users possessed high CQ, supporting a complementarity account rather than a substitution account of human-AI collaboration. Together, these findings suggest that the value of AI’s intercultural capability is realized not by AI systems alone but through the interaction among AI intercultural capability, human CQ, and culturally situated perceptions. This research advances a relational perspective on culture in human-AI collaboration and provides a foundation for understanding intercultural capability in AI.

Singing to the Social World: How Children’s Music Creates Cognitive Infrastructure for Language

Previous studies on metaphor and music have yielded fruitful results in recent decades; however, few have investigated the interactive relationship between multimodal metaphor, metonymy, music, and embodiment in children’s musical compositions. This study examines how concrete images, sound phrases, and social greetings are conceptualized and represented multimodally in musical and physical modes in “Music Together,” a popular early childhood music development program. Through cognitive-pragmatic analysis of musical scores, lyrics, and movement instructions, we demonstrate that children’s music employs sophisticated form-function pairings that serve distinct developmental purposes. Our findings reveal that musical features (pitch contours, harmonic structures, rhythmic patterns) function as sonic analogs for dynamic processes, creating embodied experiences that support language acquisition and conceptual development. Repetitive patterns in children’s music function metonymically, creating part-whole relationships that facilitate memory reinforcement and pattern recognition. Musical interactions between children and caregivers establish the cooperative infrastructure necessary for communication development through shared intentionality, mutual attention, and emotional coordination. This research demonstrates that children’s music represents a sophisticated cognitive tool that creates multimodal conceptualizations through the integration of metonymic imagination, metaphorical reasoning, and interactive embodied experience.
