Transitions for climate change adaptation, energy and food security, aerial rivers (flying rivers), Latin American studies, Sustainable management of land-water systems

My career goal is to provide cutting-edge climate service for adaptation under future environmental challenges. I worked previously in a global climate think tank, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), and supported various climate-development projects. My practical experiences in PIK have inspired my research on the sustainable management of land-water resources. My research work examines the changes in aerial rivers by ongoing deforestation in Amazonia. The aerial rivers (or flying rivers) are the preferential pathways of moisture flows in the atmosphere. Opposite to their surface counterparts, they are recharged by evapotranspiration and are discharged by the precipitation process. Different from the rather studied ‘atmospheric rivers’, the aerial rivers/flying rivers are probabilistic long-term phenomena. They connect land and water systems. Deforestation in the upwind regions influences the precipitation in downwind regions through the aerial rivers. They govern the rainfall regime and connect entities across jurisdictional boundaries and watersheds.

I use the earth system model to quantitatively understand the land use change impacts on water resources through the aerial rivers in South America. I also examined the potential of managing the aerial rivers through land planning. In 2018, I proposed a science-based policy of aerial river management to the Bolivian officials which was then accepted. This proposal suggests reforesting important upwind regions (Beni and Pando departments) to bring additional freshwater to a water-scarce downwind city.

Apart from aerial rivers, I am also interested in sustainable transitions for climate change adaptation. My research approach includes quantitatively calculating sectoral decarbonization pathways and qualitatively observing societal transitions after climate disasters. Previously, I use a political scientific framework to discuss Colombian energy transitions after the record-breaking mega-drought.

It is my pleasure to join the CoS and carry on my exploration of transitions for climate change adaptation and sustainable management of land-water systems. I will be happy to talk about research but am also excited to share thoughts about sports, art, literature, music, wine, and other wonderful parts of life with all of you.
