水誘發自組裝與可變形超分子骨架

文/ 化學系 王建隆 教授

Prof. Chien-Lung Wang took thermodynamics and structural characterization as the foundation to establish the Laboratory of Self-Assembly Functional Materials. His research team integrates the knowledge and techniques in molecular synthesis, structural characterization and morphological optimization to systematically examine the multi-scale structure-property relationship of functional materials. His recent publications in J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2022, 144, 9390 and J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2022, 144, 7768 were inspired by the water-induced self-assembly and shapeshifting behaviors of living matter. To incorporate these fascinating characteristics of living matter into synthetic matter, he raised the conformational freedom of his molecules to diversify their self-assembly pathways. This strategy makes his molecular system difficult to be investigated as the conformational flexibility randomizes the geometric features of the synthetic motifs. Nevertheless, his group managed to use water or crystallization conditions to guide the molecules to self-assemble into various ordered supramolecular structures, and they carried out in-depth structural characterization to nicely revealed the complex self-assembly behaviors of the molecules. As nature materials delivers functions through complex self-assembly processes, studying synthetic matter with diversified self-assembly pathways is important for the future of supramolecular chemistry. Prof. Wang’s characterization ability also helped him to establish interactional cooperation. With the thin-film characterization data, he helped to explain the ambient stability of perovskite solar cells, and became a coauthor in an important study published in Science 2022, 376 (6588), 73.
